Eight Ways To Support Autism In Fairfax, VA
What is Autism?
If you’re an autistic individual, or you have loved ones who with autism you might have restricted opportunities. Let’s help spread the movement and care awareness for support in improving the lives of impacted individuals with this disorder by focusing on the following suggestions.First what is Autism:
Autism spectrum disorder is a condition related to brain development that impacts how a person perceives and socializes with others, causing problems in social interaction and communication. The disorder also includes limited and repetitive patterns of behavior. The term "spectrum" in autism spectrum disorder refers to the wide range of symptoms and severity.
BrightStar Care Fairfax recommends the following tips on how care providers can aid in better caring for individuals with autism:
1. Support autistic entrepreneurs and businesses owned by autistic people.
The Art of Autism often posts about businesses that benefit autistic people. Many of our artists who we post about selling art, prints, or books. When gift-giving think about how your money can make a difference. Instead of giving a generic ribbon think about giving a unique creation or piece of jewelry made by someone on the autism spectrum.
2. Hire an autistic employee
Currently the unemployment and underemployment rate of autistic people is at 90 percent. If you are an employer think about hiring autistic people or setting up training programs that accommodate autistic people in your business.
3. Think twice about where your donations are going
The Art of Autism is a small nonprofit that is all-volunteer. Three members of our board are autistic. All monies donated goes directly to our projects which empower autistic people and their families. In contrast there is one huge nonprofit that dominates. We recommend giving directly to smaller nonprofits or local nonprofits where you can see where your money is going.
4. Encourage friendships
Kids on the autism spectrum are often left out of birthday parties or other activities outside of school. Encourage your child to invite them.
5. Volunteer
Many small nonprofits that serve autistic people can use help. School boards need enthusiastic people who believe in inclusion.
6. Share informative posts on social media that bring awareness and acceptance
The Art of Autism posts daily articles that promote inclusion, education, awareness, and are of general interest. Please share!
7. Remember teachers, paraprofessionals, and support personnel
Advocate that teachers, paraprofessionals and support personnel get the support they need to do their jobs.
8. Include autistic people in meaningful ways
No matter what discipline, autistic people can be included in more meaningful ways. For example, in research studies involve autistic researchers; in film production; involve autistic producers, animators and actors.
