Join us in celebrating the importance of friendships.
National Friendship Day is the first Sunday of August — August 2, 2020
"Friendships are the purest type of human relationships. For more than a century, we've celebrated the strength of friendship, and thanks to social media, we're able to continue celebrating with our friends no matter where they are in the world."
BrightStar Care of Conejo Valley Celebrates National Friendship Day
As "the most social beings on earth", we need to relate to others, which encourages "us to make interpersonal relationships and connect with others on a deeper level." Our need for human connection with people is why we celebrate an entire holiday based on the importance of friendships.
This August 2, we join in the celebration of "the friends who get you through hard times and cheer you on during your most successful moments." During the pandemic, many of us are missing our friends and Friendship Day is the time to get in touch with them, share, and be thankful for them.
National Friendship Day has a fascinating history and was originally created by Hallmark Cards in the 1930s as a marketing stunt. "Founder Joyce Hall designated the day would take place on August 2 and decided it would be a day to celebrate the people closest to you — and send them a card or two in the process." The occasion grew in popularity, and in 1935 Congress pronounced the first Sunday of August as National Friendship Day. After becoming an official "holiday," in 1998, the United Nations named Winnie the Pooh the world's Ambassador of Friendship. Now we celebrate National Friendship Day on the first Sunday of August.
Remember to make time to celebrate and spread the love of friendship with those closest to you. Let's make sure to reach out to those who may be alone during the pandemic, especially our seniors in isolation, and let them know how much they mean to you.
