Bio
Hi! My name is Jocelyn Gil-Preciado. I currently work for BrightStar as the Assistant Director of Nursing, and I also work at St. John’s Hospital. I graduated from West Coast University with my BSN in April of 2022. Going to school during the Pandemic was wild, but I was able to get through it. I’m a huge cat person and have a cat named Oliver. In my free time, I love to go on hikes. Fun fact, back in 2019 I was a caregiver for Brightstar! I’m very happy to help with onboarding caregivers and connecting with clients in the field! I always love to stay positive and look at the bright side of things.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN A NURSE?
I've been a nurse for 10 months.
WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO BECOME A NURSE?
As a young girl, I always accompanied my grandma to her appointments, many of them at the hospital. I would help interpret for her as she is only Spanish speaking. On one visit prior to surgery, one of the Nurses told me how much I meant to my grandma for helping her be calm so she would not be scared. The Nurse gifted me a paper origami that she made, and that experience always stayed true to my heart. I wanted to make sure that every person I ever took care of in the future felt as safe with me as my grandma did.
WHAT ASPECT OF YOUR JOB ARE YOU MOST PASSIONATE ABOUT?
Education is my favorite part of my job! Helping my clients understand how to better take care of themselves at home is super important for me. I like to break the information down in a way that they can remember! Overall, building that trust and getting to know them as a whole person and not just for their diagnosis is my priority.
HOW ARE YOU MAKING THINGS MORE POSSIBLE FOR YOUR BRIGHTSTAR CLIENTS?
I like to make sure that Caregivers are properly trained and find the right match for the Client. I like that BrightStar Care provides a 100% compatibility match of their Caregivers to their Clients. When meeting clients I always make sure to ask in-depth questions about their care. I do a home safety check, and I also ask if they need additional resources to make sure that they are safe at home!
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER NURSES?
My advice is to always be compassionate. At the end of the day, you get to go home and have more freedom than many of the clients that are taken care of at home. Always be a listening ear, and get to know who they are. Don’t ever let a bad day make you bitter. 😊
TELL US YOUR FAVORITE NURSING MOMENT/STORY
One of my favorite moments was caring for a client who had been in the hospital for many months. In the beginning, he was nonverbal, but I made sure to ask his family what his favorite music was and his favorite movies in order to help him connect to that. Little by little he would begin to move his hands to the music and would begin to laugh at the movies we watched. It warmed my heart so much! I would read to him, help him with exercises, and all his activities of daily living. As time went by, he would thank me over the phone for all the care that BrightStar Care and I provided helping him to have a positive outcome and to improve, This experience really made my job feel extremely rewarding!
HOW DO YOU RE-ENERGIZE?
I re-energize by taking long walks by the beach or working out. I enjoy the gym, and also yoga. I also love to listen to meditation podcasts or music. It is really important to find different outlets that help to de-stress the mind! 😊
