Nomination Letter

Written by the client's mother, Becky

Kate Baehman, RN, came to us as a new graduate, eager to train in how to give John the specialty care he needs. She’s a quiet, self-assured young woman with a friendly and calm personality, and very likeable. Along with efficiently providing the care he requires, she easily fell into John’s routine of care and daily activities, also participating fully in various interests that John enjoys, helping him to engage as fully as he is able.

John requires maximal assistance in all of his activities of daily living. He is a quadriplegic with limited use of his arms and hands. He has a trach and a g-tube for feeding, uses orthotics for support of his trunk and body, his ankles and feet, and also for his wrists and hands. He requires many exercises and range of motion activities, along with proper positioning. Kate takes this all in stride and efficiently provides whatever the situation demands.

Kate is always ready to step up to take on any responsibility given to her. She is very organized and takes her position as caregiver seriously, researching and investigating possible solutions for issues as they arise. In fact, she took it upon herself, shortly after starting to work with John, to enroll in a week-long course of study – out of town – to really learn about the ventilator that John uses 16 hours a day.

She initiates contact with medical staff when questions arise and helps in passing on information to other caregivers who work with John. Kate has been instrumental in organizing lists for on-going monthly ordering of supplies and equipment. She has also
organized the list of supplies that are needed when the family goes on an extended trip.

Kate has helped to make it possible for John to accompany the family on trips away from home. Without her help it would have been impossible for John to fly to Maine to be the ringbearer for his sister in her wedding. And also for John to attend a family reunion in Minnesota.

Kate also helps John with participation in recreational activities. Along with helping him with his computer for texting friends and family and loading games and activities, she also helps him to set up the many wooden puzzles that he enjoys working on, as well as creating painted birdhouses. She also often goes to glass class with him where he engages with others socially and helps to create fused glass items.
