Williamsburg residents who are no longer able to pedal a bicycle have a chance to ride again with the help of the Cycling Without Age program.
“The program will provide an opportunity for the elderly and those with limited mobility to experience the joy of ‘feeling the wind in your hair’ by going on pleasant bicycle rides,” chairman Rick Nevins said.
Cycling Without Age for the Williamsburg area launched publicly June 12 at Billsburg Brewery. There were more than 100 people at the event, according to a news release from Edgeworth Park at New Town. The program will offer weekday rides on Jamestown Island and the Virginia Capital Trail to local continuing care retirement communities. These rides will be offered in mid-July, Nevins said. The program launched with one trishaw, a three-wheeled cycle with a bench seat that can hold up to two passengers.
Williamsburg Landing was eager to get involved with the program because of a passionate group of residents with its own bike club, according to Kathy Kammer, senior director of community relations and communications at Williamsburg Landing.
“Cycling Without Age — Williamsburg gives our residents at Edgeworth Park at New Town the opportunity to ride a bike again without having to do the pedaling,” Scott Wise, co-owner of Edgeworth Park at New Town said. “Our residents are so excited to participate in the program.”
Cycling Without Age is an international program that began in 2012 in Copenhagen, Denmark, and the program is available in 38 countries.
