- Wash your feet every day. Sounds simple, but washing daily with mild soap (and rinsing well) can prevent fungus and bacteria from growing. Be sure to dry completely, especially between the toes, and apply moisturizer.
- Wear clean socks every day. Breathable cotton socks are the best, and if they get damp, replace with a clean, dry pair. Alternate your shoes so that you don’t were the same pair every day, and make sure they fit properly and offer support. Never go barefoot!
- Trim your toenails at least twice a month to prevent ingrown toenails and to keep them from pushing against the toe of your shoes. If you can't reach your toes or see them properly, or if your hands are unsteady, ask your senior care provider from BrightStar Care of Tucson to help.
- Keep an eye on changes in your feet to help prevent painful conditions. Check your feet for blisters, cuts, sores and cracks that may become infected. Inspect your toenails for discoloration, red puffy skin around the nail and ingrown toenails.
