Supporting Veterans - Vet Assist Program
Helping Veterans in Need of Home Care Services in East County San Diego
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) estimates that the Veteran population in San Diego county is at nearly 236,00 individuals for the year 2017, not including surviving spouses. This number is expected to rise to just over 240,000 in 2018. Roughly 1 million veterans in the state of California fall into the senior category of ages 55+. BrightStar Care is committed to assisting these veterans and their surviving spouses with their care needs. By partnering with the VetAssist Program, BrightStar Care is getting these veterans and their families some much deserved in-home care assistance. This means that any individual who has served at least 90 days in the military or any surviving spouse of a veteran who has served a minimum of 90 days, with at least one day during wartime (between December 7, 1941-December 31, 1946 WWII Era, June 27, 1950-January 31, 1955 Korean Conflict Era, August 5, 1964-May 7, 1975 Vietnam Era, or February 28, 1961-August 5, 1964 for veterans who served “in country” (in Vietnam) can qualify to receive in home care assistance. While the VA may take several months to review required documentation, approve the paperwork and begin funds, home care can still start almost immediately with the VetAssist Program. The VA benefit can last their entire lifetime as long as they remain in compliance with VA guidelines.
“These individuals and their spouses devoted themselves to fighting for our country and many of them aren’t even aware of the benefits that are available to them. That’s where we come in. We partner with home care organizations such as BrightStar Care to send caregivers into clients’ homes so that they get the much needed care and assistance they deserve,” -Jennifer Kodman, Regional Manager, VetAssist Program.
