Marin County Aging In Place Trends For 2019
Report finds that Marin County has oldest residents in the Bay Area
The Mercury News reports that Marin residents are the oldest in the Bay Area and will likely face housing and transportation issues for an aging population in the years ahead. The report cited in the recent article is from the Association of Bay Area Governments. “The report, “State of the Region” synthesizes economic, demographic and land use data to assess how the region is changing and how planners are addressing issues across the Bay Area. What stands out most for Marin is the age of its population: It has the oldest and most rapidly aging population in the Bay Area. Almost one in five of the county’s residents are 65 or older.
“It’s information that has to be kept in mind for planning in Marin,” said Cynthia Kroll, chief economist and project director at ABAG. “Marin has certain transportation and housing needs that will have to be addressed for that population. What will housing demand for that group look like in 20 years? Those are the questions planners should be thinking about.”

It’s an ongoing issue now and will be for the future.” Aging is happening unevenly throughout the region. San Francisco is the only one of the nine counties with a decrease in its population of those over 65, while the number is rising steadily in the other eight counties, according to the report. The median age has dropped since 2007 in San Francisco, Santa Clara, Alameda, and San Mateo counties, but is increasing in the North Bay counties.
Consistent with nationwide trends, the population overall is aging, according to the report. In 2013, the median age in the Bay Area was 38, compared with 37.7 in 2010 and 36.6 in 2000. The number of people 65 and older represented 12.7 percent of the population in the region in 2013, compared with 11.8 percent of the state and 13.4 percent of the nation.
Marin has the second-smallest households at about 2.4 residents, only behind San Francisco, suggesting many elderly live alone or are empty nesters.”
