The Lancet, a medical journal, reports that: “Physical distancing plays the greatest role in reducing the spread of COVID-19, and eye protection could reduce the risk of infection from 16% to 6% compared to those without eye protection.”

“Given the above evidence, wearing eye protection in high-risk situations seems prudent,” said Vincente Diaz, MD, from Yale University School of Medicine.

Eye protection is particularly recommended for health care personnel who go into situations every day in which they are or may be caring for a patient infected with Covid-19.  And they are recommended for the general public (especially those in high risk groups) when there is significant amount of community spread, as there is now in the Salt Lake area.

  • Opt for glasses over contacts. If you need vision correction: under your face-shield/goggles also wear glasses, rather than contacts, as people who wear contacts tend to touch their eyes more often than the average person. Changing to glasses could help prevent exposure and reduce eye-rubbing, and glasses can offer some shield from infected respiratory droplets.

  • Goggle it up. If caring for someone who may be infected by the virus, wear safety goggles around your eyes for protection……another option is……

  • Face shields with high crowns and chin protection that wrap around the face to the point of the ears are recommended for infection control purposes. They should fit snugly and the foam brow-band contoured to the wearer.

  • Get a mask that molds to your nose. Masks that have a flexible wire can be molded around the bridge of your nose, blocking the warm exhaled air from your mouth and preventing goggles and face shields from fogging. Alternatively, consider putting a tissue inside the top of the mask to capture moisture from your breath.

  • Sanitize glasses/shields after each use. Healthcare practitioners who wear glasses or protective goggles (like surgeons) have washed their goggles/shields with soapy water for decades. This technique leaves a thin film that reduces surface tension that builds up from your breath, maintaining clear vision. Follow soap and water cleaning with a disinfectant alcohol wipe or use a paper towel with hand sanitizer to finish cleaning.
