Well Checks for Richmond Seniors During A Storm

How to Best Care for Richmond Seniors During a Weather Emergency

When Hurricane Dorian was whipping the southeast, the Richmond Ambulance Authority and the Capital Area Agency on Aging stressed the importance of checking on older and disabled relatives during the storm.

Virginia officials say, “welfare checks on the elderly are more than just a knock on the door” in a weather emergency.

Richmond families are urged to practice their emergency and evacuation plans prior to a weather emergency. Senior Care professionals suggest that a senior should have up to five family members and friends to check on them and neighbors.

Since storms like Hurricane Dorian are unpredictable, experts suggest that “attention should be given to making sure that adequate medications and a supply of nonperishable food along with sufficient drinking water is available,” says Senior Connections’ Thelma Watson. “If you’re older and live alone, keep emergency numbers readily accessible in case of an emergency and know of nearby emergency shelters communities have put in place.”
