CASE MANAGING THE TBI PATIENT

Michelle McDonagh, MA in Forensic Psychology and a Certified Brain Injury Specialist (CBIS), presentation looked at the definition of TBI, and included a discussion of the types of TBI, causatively related disorders, including neurological, neuroendocrine, psychiatric, as well as sexual dysfunction, sleep disorders, and coronary disorders caused by TBI. The course taught systems of care for the TBI patients, and complications associated with absent or inappropriate treatment.
There were 25 people in attendance including Case Managers and Social Worker from the Richmond, VA area.
This year 1.5 million Americans will sustain a traumatic brain injury (TBI), and 500,000 will be hospitalized, with over 200,000 going on to demonstrate persistent cognitive, physical and/or emotional deficits that will prevent functioning at pre-injury levels. Males aged 15-24, and persons older than 75 years of age, have the highest incidence of TBI.
