Fighting Mental Illness Stigma in Morris County
The Morris County Stigma-Free Communities Initiative is a county-wide program which aims to eradicate the stigma associated with mental illness and substance use disorders.
33 towns, county government, hospitals, some school districts, the County Sheriff and Prosecutor, and many non-profits have joined together for the countywide Stigma-Free initiative. The Initiative is dedicated to raising awareness of illnesses including dementia and Alzheimer’s, by creating an environment where affected individuals are supported in their efforts to achieve wellness.
Supporting the initiative is a group called Mental Health Players. They are volunteer actors in Morris County, trained to depict realistic scenarios of Mental Illness. They perform for audiences throughout the county and give basic education about depression, dementia, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, eating disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder and generalized anxiety. The goal is for family members, care givers, community members and professionals to recognize the signs and symptoms of mental illness and to the challenges accompanying stereotypes and stigma.
