9-25-19 Cardiovascular Health CE Course with Dr. Phoebe Ashley, MD, MS, FACC

Dr. Phoebe Ashley, MD, MS, FACC, a Board Certified Cardiologist with a special interest in women’s and preventive cardiovascular medicine presented a holistic approach to the care of a women’s heart through life’s various stages at the September 25th BrightStar Care Sponsored Continuing Education Event,


The CE Event discussion was around hormones and hormone therapies  Homrone Therepy can at times seem daunting, as recommendations for use of hormones as a therapy in treating changes our bodies go through seem to be continually changing. The presentation delved into the use of hormone replacement therapy, including the risks, the benefits, and where the theories on such therapy stand today. The cardiovascular benefits of estrogen were examined, as well as the cardiovascular changes associated with the menopause transition. The course looked at the impact age can have on hormone treatment (The Timing Hypothesis), as well as the importance of vascular health and how estrogen is related.

Attendees learned:

- The cardio effects, protective and negative, of estrogen, and associated hormone therapies - Menopausal related changes
- Estrogen treatment at various ages
- The relation of estrogen to vascular health
- Hormone replacement therapy, what the studies have told us, and the decision to use or not use
- Lifestyle modifications for reduction of risk

About Dr. Ashley:
Dr. Ashley is an Assistant Professor at VCU, where she has received numerous awards, including in 2016 being elected by her students and peers as a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, in recognition of her teaching. Dr. Ashley is honored to be a member of the Pauley Heart team. She maintains an active cardiology practice.
