A Care Story for Ms. Edith
For 3 ½ years, two extraordinary women shared a special bond based on kindness, caring, respect, and humor. Ms. Edith as Elizabeth called her was an extremely private and introverted person, and she needed just the right person to care for her after a Parkinson’s related fall. Elizabeth was that caregiver.
Edith’s daughters shared that Elizabeth kept them in the loop with phone calls, and FaceTime and by sharing stories. One story, about a white bird, was especially meaningful. A white bird would come and visit. Ms. Edith at her windowsill and she was mesmerized by this bird. Elizabeth asked the elders in her community what this meant. They told her that it was a sign of peace. After a while, a single feather was left behind.
Elizabeth knew that the time was near and helped the daughters navigate what that meant.
A short while later, Ms. Edith gently passed away. Her daughters saw a white butterfly dancing around her simple grave and Elizabeth shared what she learned that meant. That the person who left this world was happy. And that is a good thing. One of the many gifts that came from the shared bond of two extraordinary women.
