Going Gold for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month – Honoring the Warriors Among Us

September 16, 2024

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month (CCAM), a time dedicated to shining a light on the brave young fighters and their families who battle pediatric cancer. Across the world, organizations come together to increase awareness, raise critical funds, and support research in hopes of finding a cure. Here at BrightStar Care of Milford-Framingham, we are proudly joining this effort by "Going Gold" – a symbolic gesture representing strength, courage, and the enduring hope for a future without childhood cancer.

This month is particularly close to our hearts as we stand beside our dear friend and community member, 7-year-old Julia, who has been courageously fighting Stage 4 Neuroblastoma since February 2023. Julia’s story is a reminder of the strength and resilience these young warriors show every day, and we honor her, along with all the children who continue their battles against cancer.

What is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month?

Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is observed every September to spotlight pediatric cancer – the number one cause of death by disease in children in the United States. According to the American Childhood Cancer Organization (ACCO), around 15,780 children under the age of 19 are diagnosed with cancer each year in the U.S. While advancements in medical treatment have improved survival rates, childhood cancer continues to impact thousands of families, requiring ongoing awareness and financial support for research.

The Go Gold® movement, initiated by ACCO, uses the color gold to represent childhood cancer awareness. Gold symbolizes the preciousness of children, and during this month, families, survivors, and supporters wear gold to express solidarity with those affected by the disease.

Julia: A Brave Fighter in Our Community

Here at BrightStar Care, Julia’s journey has touched all of us. Diagnosed with Stage 4 Neuroblastoma in early 2023, Julia has undergone numerous treatments with remarkable strength and bravery. Neuroblastoma is a type of cancer that develops in certain types of nerve tissue, most often affecting children under the age of 5. Julia’s fight has been nothing short of inspiring, and she remains a beacon of hope for all those affected by pediatric cancer.

Julia’s courage serves as a testament to the resilience and determination of children fighting cancer. This September, we honor her, along with all Childhood Cancer Warriors.

How You Can Help: Ways to Support Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

  1. Go Gold®: Wear gold throughout the month to show your support for Childhood Cancer Awareness. Whether it’s a pin, a bracelet, or a shirt, each golden gesture helps raise awareness.

  2. Donate: Consider making a donation to organizations like the American Childhood Cancer Organization (ACCO) or local foundations that support childhood cancer research and provide resources for families in need. Every dollar goes towards finding better treatments and giving children a fighting chance.

  3. Spread Awareness: Use your voice and your platform to share stories, statistics, and information about Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Whether it’s through social media, community events, or word-of-mouth, increasing visibility can drive change and support.

  4. Support Local Families: If you know a family affected by childhood cancer, offering a helping hand can mean the world. From assisting with day-to-day tasks to simply being a source of encouragement, your support can make a lasting difference in their lives.

At BrightStar Care of Milford-Framingham, we are dedicated to making a difference for these families, whether through raising awareness, donating, or simply standing beside them during their fight. We believe that every child deserves a future filled with hope, and that future starts with us coming together in solidarity.

Together, we can help raise awareness, drive research, and bring hope to families like Julia's. Let’s honor the bravery of these incredible children and continue to fight for a cure.
