Condition Corner: Managing Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)
CHF is a progressive heart condition that impairs the heart’s ability to pump blood efficiently. As a result, fluid can build up in the heart, lungs, and other parts of the body, such as the legs and abdomen. CHF is also a leading cause of hospitalization among adults over 65.
Symptoms of CHF:
- Shortness of breath
- Heart palpitations and chest pain
- Fatigue and swelling (in the ankles, legs, or abdomen)
- Weight gain, nausea, and a persistent cough
Causes and Risk Factors:
- Chronic conditions like kidney disease and diabetes
- Lifestyle factors such as tobacco or alcohol use
- High blood pressure and a family history of heart issues
How to Manage CHF:
- Daily weight tracking to monitor fluid retention
- Low-sodium diets and fluid restrictions
- Exercise and managing risk factors like hypertension
Our caregivers can support CHF management through medication reminders, weight monitoring, and personalized care plans to improve quality of life.
Emergency Prep: Staying Safe from Fires
It’s essential to be prepared in case of a fire. Use RACE as your guide:
- Rescue: If it’s safe, help others out of harm’s way.
- Alert: Pull the fire alarm, call 911, and yell “Fire!”
- Confine: Close doors to contain the fire.
- Extinguish/Evacuate: Use a fire extinguisher if possible or evacuate immediately.
Fire Extinguisher Use: PASS
- Pull the pin
- Aim at the base of the fire
- Squeeze the handle
- Sweep side to side
Infection Control: It’s Flu Season!
The CDC recommends flu vaccines for everyone over 6 months of age to prevent illness during flu season. If you haven’t done so, make sure to log into WorkBright to complete your flu vaccine form for tracking purposes.
Flu Vaccine Myth:
The vaccine won’t make you sick! It works by stimulating your immune system to build antibodies, so your body can respond quickly if exposed to the flu.Caregiver 360: Hand-Washing Dishes
Proper dishwashing keeps kitchens safe and hygienic. Follow these steps:
- Gather supplies: sponge, dish soap, drying rack.
- Scrape food into the trash and load the sink.
- Wash from small to large items using soapy water.
- Rinse and let dry on a rack or mat.
For heavily soiled dishes, soak them in soapy water for up to 24 hours.
Dementia Highlight: Responding to Challenging Behaviors with TADA
When working with clients who have dementia, use the TADA approach:
- Tolerate behaviors that are not harmful.
- Anticipate triggers like hunger, pain, or fatigue.
- Don’t Agitate further—stay calm and de-escalate situations.
De-escalation Tips:
- Approach from the side, avoid sudden touches, and use soft tones.
- Offer choices or distractions: “Can you help me with this?”
- Engage in alternate activities to redirect attention safely.
