This week we will all be celebrating the mom’s in our lives who have helped guide and care for us. What better way to celebrate a mom than with the word “momma.”
Blaze was born with Trisomy 21, Down Syndrome, in 2013 with a weight of only 4 lbs. 45 long days and nights later, Mom Stacey was able to bring Blaze home weighing 1 lb. heavier and with her husband and 3 other kids they prepared for a long road to support Blaze in living the best life possible!
At 2 months old, Blaze began physical and occupation therapy to help him gain mobility and independence through the Early Childhood Intervention(ECI) program. Throughout his therapy, Blaze remained non-verbal and communicated using grunts to express himself. After 2 years he aged out of the system which left Stacey unsure of what options there were for Blaze to keep moving towards his goals of walking, jumping and speaking. Then Stacey heard about BrightStar Care of Lubbock.
“We learned about Brightstar Care and their passion for children with special needs. When Blaze was placed on services with Brightstar care at the age of 3, he was only just starting to pull up to a table. He could take a few steps but not successfully in a row while trying to maintain his balance. We started out with physical therapy in the beginning. I think SUPERMAN technic was his favorite. The therapy team would pick him up as if he was flying. I never really understood the point of that at the time. Now I see exactly what the point was. They were posturing his body and doing strength training in his neck muscles and upper core.” -Stacey
After seeing Blaze progress in a short period of time with BrightStar Care of Lubbock’s physical therapist, Stacey added speech and occupational therapy to his regimen. One of the first skills that Blaze’s speech therapist wanted to work on was giving him the ability to communicate. Starting with simple signs taught to Blaze and his family. Blaze was excited to be able to start communicating with his family and his family understanding and responding to him.
The therapy team kept working with him by creating fun games that aligned with each therapists treatment plan. Over time Blaze was running around the house, putting on his own clothes and responding to Stacey whenever she signed, “Go get your red truck.” Stacey was overwhelmed with his progress with BrightStar Care of Lubbock’s therapy team and at 5 1/2 years old her mom cup was overflowed when Blaze broke through his grunts and said, “Momma!”
“It was the best thing I had ever heard. It absolutely brought tears to my eyes. Most mommies hear their child say that at 18 months and after 5 years he said his first word” -Stacey
Our team is beyond excited to learn about Blaze’s continued progress with our therapy team and we enjoy learning about him hitting milestone after milestone.
So to all the mothers, we celebrate you and hope you discover a newfound joy every time you hear the word mom, mommy, momma…
