Tips For Caring For A Loved One With Dementia

August 6, 2019
At BrightStar Care, our compassionate home care professionals go above and beyond to help families provide their loved ones with the highest quality life possible, regardless of their medical challenges. In that sense, we act — and are treated — like a member of the family.

We’ve seen firsthand the immense stress and strain families experience while trying to care for a relative with dementia. Coping with significant changes in an aging loved one can be difficult in general, but dementia presents a variety of especially dramatic challenges. Dementia isn’t just a memory issue; it can transform a loved one into what seems like a completely different person.

We’ve listed some of the common symptoms of dementia in this infographic:

BrightStar Care is here to help, whether it’s by stepping in to provide the highest level of in-home care for seniors affected by Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia or by lending our expertise to families who feel lost and overwhelmed.

Here are a few of our tips for caring for a loved one with dementia.

Practice Patience

Looking after someone who doesn’t always remember who or where they are and occasionally exhibits withdrawn or depressed moods requires a great deal of patience. You’re only human, and it’s natural to get frazzled in these uncertain and ever-changing circumstances. But, try to put yourself in their shoes and imagine how they must feel! Empathizing with their situation will help you to stay calm and collected when things get chaotic.

Seek Support

Finding a group of people who know what you’re going through who are willing to listen and give advice can ease a great deal of stress. Seek out support groups or organizations in your community who can provide resources and a shoulder to lean on.

Give Yourself a Break

Dementia is unpredictable, and some days with your loved one will be better than others. Take it as it comes, and never blame yourself for those down days when nothing seems to go right. Although your family probably thinks you’re a superhero with all you’re able to do for them while also taking care of an elderly loved one, you’re only human. Don’t expect perfection, and don’t be afraid to take time for yourself. You can’t properly care for others if you don’t care for yourself first.

Look Ahead

If you’ve been caring for your loved one by yourself and finding it negatively impacting your career or taking significant time away from your spouse, children or other family responsibilities, it’s clear you need to come up with a better plan for the future. Consider hiring a professional caregiver who can devote the necessary time, energy, and health care expertise to keeping your loved one safe, comfortable, and engaged.
