Home Health Care News (HHCN) shared their top trends and predictions for the year ahead
While "2019 will go down as one of the most important years in Medicare-certified home health care history" and last year set the stage for several new regulatory and business trends in 2020, they say "Almost all these trends are somehow linked to Patient-Driven Groupings Model (PDGM), the home health reimbursement overhaul that went live on Jan. 1.
Here are some of the predictions for the Home Health Care industry according to HHCN :
1. Home Health Care providers will consolidate
HHCN's report says that "even with record-setting consolidation, the home health industry will still be extremely fragmented when 2020 comes to a close"
2. Greater market adaptation will happen
3. Operational strategies will undergo major changes
4. Watchdogs will more aggressively hunt for fraud
5. Regulatory challenges will create home health deserts
Home health deserts are areas where there are no home healthcare services offered. It is expected that these "deserts will form in the oldest, sickest and frailest population zones", and if any areas do become home health deserts this year, they predict "CMS will likely take steps to course correct, perhaps reducing some of its recent regulatory efforts."
6. Medicare Advantage (MA) and telehealth will dominate home health technology in 2020.
HHCN points out that Home health care programs are "quickly evolving; therefore, our program integrity strategy must keep pace to address emerging challenges.”
