Real Talk: What to Say to Your Las Vegas Senior with Cancer
Cancer is a scary and uncomfortable word. Sometimes, it is hard to figure out how to respond to that word. Do you acknowledge it? Ignore it? Pretend like it’s just a cold? Fall apart and give up hope right away? Research has proven that just like it all things, Las Vegas seniors are more emotionally stable in the midst of heartbreaking news, when their support system is solid and strong. Generally it is easy to be the supportive pillar in the midst of heartache, yet when it comes to cancer, people can find themselves very easily at a loss for words. Sometimes, even knowing how to help can be difficult.
As in most crisis cases in life, sometimes the best way to help is just to listen. As you are listening to your senior, try to do it with no specific opinion. Do not offer your opinion, or come in with any judgements. The most encouraging way you can a support for your Las Vegas senior is to be a silent listener as they talk to you about their new diagnosis. If they ask you for advice, feel free to give it. Otherwise, assume the role of silent supporter.
Feel free to do research on various things such as the diagnosis, treatments, and trials, but do not voluntarily offer up your research findings. Your loved one has most likely done some research as well, has experts to talk to about next steps, and does not need several different people telling them what they think they should do while trying to swallow their new hard news. Chances are, your loved one needs a listening ear, a ready shoulder to cry on, and strong, supporting arms to be wrapped up in during this time.
