When Should Your Senior Skip Her Workout?

Believe it or not, there are some times when your elderly family member might want to avoid working out. In these situations, exercising could make problems worse or make your elderly family member more susceptible to injuring herself.

If She's Experiencing Any New Symptoms

Any new symptoms that you or your aging family member haven't already addressed with her doctor could be a reason to hold off on working out. It's always better to err on the side of caution so that your elderly family member doesn't injure herself or make a particular situation worse.

If She's Got Sores or Wounds that Aren't Healing

Sores or wounds that won't heal can be a sign of something bigger. This is especially an issue for your elderly family member if she has diabetes. Regardless of the cause, this is an issue that your senior's doctor needs to look into for her before she gets into any big workouts.

If She's Experiencing Some Eye Issues

Any eye issues that cause your elderly family member to be unable to see well are something to be aware of when it comes to her exercise plan. Eye problems can throw off your senior's balance, making her more susceptible to a fall or to another injury. If she's had eye surgery, her eye doctor will let her know when she can work out again.

If She's Had Surgery

Other types of surgery can also be a contraindication for exercise. Your senior's doctor can let you know when it's okay for her to work out again. Some types of surgery can keep her out of commission for a while in terms of her normal workout, but you'd be surprised how active she needs to be. A hip surgery, for instance, might keep her from her regular workout but she needs to be up and walking a little fairly soon after surgery.

If She's Feeling Dizzy or Experiencing Dyspnea

Shortness of breath, also called dyspnea, or feelings of dizziness are something that could indicate other problems. It's a good idea to talk with your elderly family member's doctor before exercising if she's experiencing these issues. Her doctor can rule out bigger concerns.

It's a good idea to leave a list of information about when your senior shouldn't work out for anyone who helps her when you're not around, such as home care providers. That way they can give her the support that she needs whether she's working out or not.
