In your caregiver journey with your elderly parent, you are likely to face a wide variety of emotions. You may have been prepared for feeling a level of stress, but you may not have been ready to experience the other emotions that may come. These can include guilt, anxiety, fear, and even resentment. But you may also find that this experience is extremely meaningful. Being able to cope with these emotions, and work through them in effective and healthy ways is essential to preserving your health and well-being, while also staying the highest quality caregiver possible for your parent. There are many ways you can do this, but one that can be particularly effective and accessible is journaling. Utilizing a journal to record your thoughts, feelings, and experiences can be a fantastic way to stay connected to your own experience, and reduce your stress.

Use these ways to effectively journal throughout your caregiver journey:
  • Choose a journal you'd like to look at, and a pen you enjoy riding with. While it may seem silly to put such focus on these items, these are the tools you will use to gain the benefit from journaling, so it is important for you to like them, and feel some connection to them.
  • Give yourself permission to be completely open and honest when you're writing in your journal. Remember that this is just for you, and that no one else will be able to read it unless you give them permission to. Knowing you can control the access to what your writing should give you the freedom to record your authentic thoughts and feelings, as well as experiences that you have caring for your parent. Only in complete honesty and openness can you truly explore your feelings, and work through them.
  • Use a different page for each entry you make, and date each entry. This allows you to go back and reference it's what you've written.
  • Consider splitting your journal into two sections. One can contain your entries about what you were experiencing or your feelings and emotions, and the other section can act as a gratitude journal. Keeping a gratitude Journal is a way to focus on positive things everyday of your life, and relieve stress through these moments of positivity.
  • If you are struggling to get yourself going when it comes to writing, feel free to use prompts. There are countless prompts available online, or you could approach this as simply looking in a book and taking a sentence out of it. Write from this prompt freely, recording whatever comes to mind. This can help to loosen you up and make you more comfortable writing, and eventually you may find yourself able to write your entries without this guidance.
Feeling stressed, overwhelmed, and even on the brink of being burned out can happen when you are a family caregiver. This is not only emotionally difficult for you, but it can also have negative consequences for your physical health and well-being, as well as the quality of the care you give your parents. If you feel that you are facing excessive stress in your care journey, or you want to get ahead of this stress early in your care journey, consider integrating home care into your routine. Having a senior care provider with your aging parent throughout your care journey supplements the care that you are able to give them, personalizes their lifestyle, and helps them to meet their needs on a regular basis. Knowing your senior has access to a personalized level of care designed to address their physical needs as well as their overall quality of life eases your stress and enables you to focus your energy, attention, and efforts in the most effective and meaningful ways.
