Father’s Day was first celebrated in the United States in 1910. However, it wasn’t named an official holiday until 1972. That was 58 years after Mother’s Day was made official by President Woodrow Wilson. Today, people all over the country pause to recognize the ways fathers impact our lives. As your father ages, celebrating him may be even more important than it was in his younger years. As his family caregiver, it may fall on you to plan the day. If you’re looking for ways to spend Father’s Day with your elderly dad, here are six ways to celebrate.

#1 Host a Family Gathering

A backyard barbecue or family dinner that gets everyone together is a great way to celebrate dad. Make the gathering even more special by preparing all your dad’s favorite foods. Family caregivers should encourage guests to spend time reminiscing with the guest of honor.

#2 Go to a Museum or Other Exhibit

If your dad loves history, a museum outing might be just the way to spend the day. A trip to a museum can prompt older adults to share memories with their family caregivers. You may be surprised what you learn about the past and your parent.

#3 Got to a Baseball Game

For dads who like sports, seeing a live sporting event can bring back memories of his youth or perhaps of watching his own children play baseball when they were kids. While baseball is a great outing, planning an outdoor activity requires family caregivers to do a little extra planning. Remember to bring plenty of sunscreen. Make sure your dad wears appropriate clothing for the weather that also protects him from sunburn. Plan to bring plenty of water or purchase sit at the ball field.

#4 Schedule a Day of Pampering

Make an appointment for your dad to have a massage. A massage could leave him feeling relaxed and refreshed for days. Or, take him to an old-fashioned barber shop where he can get a haircut and professional shave. Such services can boost his confidence and keep him feeling good.

#5 Watch an Old Movie

If your dad has difficulty getting around and would be happier spending a relaxing day at home with you, consider watching a favorite old movie. Invite other family members to join in. Make the event complete with popcorn or another special treat.

#6 Go to a Car Show

Dads who like cars might enjoy a leisurely stroll through a car show where they can see restored cars from their younger days. Seeing the classic cars might prompt your dad to share stories of his first car and the things he did when he was young.
