Mental Health and our Aging Population

October 6, 2023

October 10, 2023 is World Mental Awareness Day according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The theme for this year is “Mental Health is a universal human right”. WHO says that the aging population will nearly double from 2015 to 2050. Physical limitations affect everyone as they get older. The impact on independence and freedom can lead to anxiety and depression. Professional screening can be an important tool in the healing process.

A lack of social contact can also have an impact on overall well-being. Companionship and human communication are an integral part of good health. It is important to encourage elders to participate in social events, whether it is one-on-one or in a group setting.

Here are some tips for better health:

  • Use a virtual service provider for professional help if mobility is an issue.
  • If distance is a problem, reach out to seniors on a regularly scheduled basis using technology. There are many telecommunication apps that allow visual communication. Some well-known apps are Microsoft Teams and Zoom.
  • Interact with seniors by engaging in activities, such as, walking outdoors, playing board games or cards, painting or drawing together, cooking together, and watching home videos.
