As we get on in years, our muscles and bones get weaker. It is just part of the aging process. We may try to maintain our strength, but our body may have different ideas. When the situation arises, it may be unclear why our bodies are failing us. This mental awareness that we are weakening may be depressing and unforeseen because no one really talks about it. Falls can lead to injuries, sometimes fatal ones. And, falls after the age of 65 are more prevalent. So, what do we do?
The first thing is to review your situation with your doctor. There may be some medications that are interfering with your mobility. Some medications can be altered to avoid side effects. The doctor may also prescribe physical rehabilitation. Some physical therapists can come to your home; however, equipment is limited. The best option may be to go to a clinic for rehab if the situation permits. Strengthening legs, the core, and back may help with falling. Also, make sure to get enough nutrients for building strong bones and muscles. Sometimes, doctors can find digestive issues for poor absorption, such as celiac disease. Diagnosis of such diseases can improve the gut for better nutrient utilization. Also, the doctor may check for dizziness which can affect balance. There are some underlying causes of dizziness such as vertigo or anemia.
The second thing is to use the proper helping aids at home. Walkers with a stable base can help keep you mobile and get you from point A to point B. Sometimes walkers can strain the upper back, making it sore. Correctly positioning yourself in the walker may help. Staying in the center of the walker and maintaining an upright standing position could help alleviate soreness. Handrails on stairs both inside and outside the house can also assist in keeping your balance. Rails can also be helpful on in bathrooms near the toilet and shower. Also, keep paths clear of miscellaneous items to provide a safe passage. Move chairs, wastebaskets, shoes, and other materials to prevent falls. Watch for wires and plugs as well.
If you have fallen, 911 can send help to get you safely off the ground. This is a service that many forget about. Carry a phone in your pocket to make the call and an electronic lock on a door or garage could be beneficial so emergency crew can access your door. If you are prone to falls, find someone who can assist you. This could be a friend, family member, or a paid companion. Always put safety before all else.
