Celebrating Thanksgiving with our Elderly

November 20, 2023

Family, fresh homemade food, toasty fireplaces…these are the images that we think of during the holidays. Generations come together to talk, watch family movies, play games, and cook together. These moments are important in life. They create positive memories that we can cherish throughout our lives. It allows us to give time to each other and value those who are close to us. Seniors are a big part of celebrations. We learn about our food, culture, and traditions from the elders in our lives. Including them in activities can be a simple gesture, but it may mean the world to them.

Create a safe space where they can participate. Seniors can make many contributions. Here are a few ideas.
  • Providing recipes
  • Arranging center pieces, name cards, and other table decorations
  • Taking walks outdoors
  • Playing board games or cards
  • Singing in group songs
  • Dancing to music
  • Watching tv together
  • Wearing matching sports jerseys
  • Conversing about previous holidays or memories
  • Taking part in family plays or dramas
Lastly, consider elders when making a holiday menu. If there are dietary restrictions, simple foods are best. Some side dishes that can be adjusted for gluten, dairy, and soy. Here are some examples:
  • Mashed potatoes or hash browns (substitutions for butter and milk can be made with dairy free margarine and water)
  • Pasta (gluten free pasta is available at most grocery stores)
  • Desserts (cakes and pies can be made gluten free and vegan)
  • Sauteed veggies made with olive oil, salt, and black pepper, such as, green beans, asparagus, and zucchini
  • Cranberry sauce

We at Brightstar Care of Hudson/Solon wish you and your loved ones a very Happy Thanksgiving.
