Benefits of Home Health Care, Independent Living, and Skilled Nursing

Does your senior need some extra tender care now? The years take a toll on the mind and body no matter what we do to slow it down. Physical weakness and cognitive changes eventually arrive, and they bring some restrictions to routine activities. I have heard the words, “I am trying to walk but I don’t know why my legs are just giving way from under me. I try to be strong when I am walking, but I keep falling. I am afraid to fall.” As family, we may try our best to support our loved ones. But, sometimes, time constraints and physical constraints can hinder the proper care that is necessary. And that is where it is important to consider, really consider help for yourself and your loved ones. So, let’s explore options.

First, most of these options are costly because they are usually out of pocket expenses. Many times, things are covered partially or fully if medical attention is required, but these benefits are limited and usually short-term. And this philosophy applies to all three options. There are some long-term insurance plans that can be purchased, but these have to be obtained when you are in good health. And plans must be thoroughly examined to see if coverage applies in different situations.

Home health agencies can provide one-on-one care. They can aid with daily routine activities and medical care. This can be a great option if you need someone to give personal attention to your loved one. This one-to-one ratio can be beneficial in many situations. In institutions, the caregiver to client ratio is much higher. There is little social interaction unless your loved one is mobile enough to visit with other clients or participate in group activities. If your senior has apprehension about socializing in groups or being left alone in their room for long periods of time, home health care can provide the best option. It can also be helpful if you are concerned about safety and falling. Home health care can overlook the situation more consistently. Home health care is also financially beneficial because you control the hours of assistance.

Independent living is a wonderful option for mobile individuals who want a maintenance-free lifestyle. Amenities can vary from location to location. Generally, they offer transportation to certain places, free Wi-Fi, lawn care, snow removal, and free cable. Extra services could include on-site beauty salon, food prep, activities room, business center, laundry facilities, and more.

Skilled nursing facilities are options for those individuals who need more medical care. They can offer 24/7 care with food, care, and medical attention. But they don’t offer personal caregivers. Usually, doctors come in once-per-day to check on patients, and aides come in to help with restroom and grooming needs as schedules permit. This type of facility offers a place to stay for those who don’t have any other type of assistance.
See what option suits your lifestyle and needs. Thorough research is best when done as early as possible. The need for care sometimes appears overnight. To get the best support, give yourself time to explore different avenues and places. To start your research, look for resources available at your local Senior Centers or through friends or relatives who have experienced this process. If your loved one is a Veteran, the VA can be a resource on what is available to assist as well.

You can do research online or you can call Home Care Companies for more information as to how they can provide care for your loved one.
