As a caregiver, you hope you never have to use the life-saving training that you’ve received, but when that moment comes, the steps that you choose to take next matter the most. In fact, as BrightStar Care of Honolulu’s own Justin Chen knows firsthand, it can mean the difference between life and death.Justin, a pre-med student with a passion for helping others, has been an employee with BrightStar since 2016. Recently while on a shift with one of his clients, his life saving skills were put to the test.
October 16, 2017 began as an ordinary day. Justin arrived at his shift and greeted his client, as usual. In the middle of his shift, Justin was assisting with some household tasks, when he noticed something wasn’t right with his client. Justin went to the client to check on him, and notified BrightStar Care of Honolulu Director of Nursing, Jennifer Pyun, RN. She stayed on the phone as Justin asked the client questions. During their conversation, the client went limp. The client had lost consciousness and become unresponsive. While Jennifer called 911, Justin checked the client’s pulse and respirations, finding none. Remaining calm, but acting quickly, Justin performed 30 chest compressions followed by 2 respirations. The client regained consciousness and became responsive! Paramedics arrived shortly thereafter, and the client was taken for treatment.
We would like to recognize Justin as one of our Brightest Stars and commend him for his life-saving actions. We are honored and proud to have Justin as part of our BrightStar Care team. It’s outstanding caregivers like Justin that allow BrightStar Care of Honolulu to live up to our brand of a higher standard of care.
