Austin Seniors are Beating the Heat with the Help of the Austin Police Department!
The Austin Police Association have delivered five free A/C units to seniors so far in 2018, and they have 36 more in storage, waiting to be installed.
For seniors living without air conditioning in the Texas heat this initiative is truly a lifesaver. Recently, an Austin woman who has lived without air conditioning for years received a new A/C unit delivered by Austin police officers and Chief Brian Manley.
The gift was made possible through the Austin Police Department's Austin Cops for Charities program.
An elderly woman living in East Austin had been without air conditioning since 2004. She had been trying to survive the heat with four fans. Due to the heat she had a heart attack, and had been in and out of the hospital. The women said she would sometimes visit friends' homes to escape the heat. According to reports, she was speechless and when she received the unit.
"These are the things obviously we very much enjoy getting to do,” Austin Police Chief Manley said. “Getting to provide a level of service. Getting to improve somebody's quality of life is as simple as installing a unit like we're doing today."
