Seniors, Swimming and Safety

The Naples area is a main attraction for beautiful beaches, scenic sunsets and outdoor activities. It’s also a great place for the retired and elderly to call home and enjoy all that the area has to offer.

Warm waters and bright sunshine make swimming in the ocean virtually unavoidable for all ages. Naples Beach, for example, has soft white sand and relatively calm turquoise water. However, the surf can be dangerous at times due to its potential for rip currents. Although the sea can be alluring, our elderly loved ones need to take extra precautions when entering the waves for a swim.

Here are some cautions to consider when spending the day at the beach:
Choose a lifeguard-protected area. Find a section of beach to settle for the day where there are lifeguards actively patrolling the water. It is also best to swim directly in front of the lifeguard’s chair to ensure the lifeguard has the best view of your loved one.
Never swim alone. Even under the watchful eye of the lifeguard, it is always wise to swim using the buddy system. If something happens in the water, the buddy can help by flagging the guard on patrol to bring attention as soon as possible. As the buddy, it’s also a good idea to assist your loved one in and out of the water, which can be full of seashells and small pebbles.
Know limitations. Consider your elderly loved one’s physical fitness and limitations as well as any medications that may alter balance, energy level or hearing. • Stay in shallow depth. Riding the small waves can be enjoyable and much less dangerous for elderly. It also minimizes the distance to shore if they need a break or the lifeguard needs to reach them.
Keep it brief. To avoid the onset of exhaustion while in the water, take frequent breaks and keep length of time short.
Designate a ‘water watcher’. Everyone who goes to the beach should enjoy it! If you have in-home care like the services BrightStar Care offers, consider taking them to the beach with you for peace of mind and a little respite for yourself.
