Long-term care (LTC) insurance is not medical insurance, and it is not part of Medicare.
LTC insurance is a policy that you or your parents may have purchased from a life insurance agent or a financial planner. This type of insurance policy covers the cost of nursing home care, assisted living care, and home care.

Key questions to ask about your LTC insurance policy
To help you better understand your LTC insurance policy, BrightStar Care suggests the following questions:
  • What is the elimination period (out-of-pocket, self-pay) before your policy takes effect? Is it calendar days or days of paid care? What are the minimum hours a day that will count? Does a hospital stay or rehab stay count?
  • How many ADLs (activities of daily living) do you need assistance with to qualify for activating your policy/claim? Does dementia count?
  • Are a doctor's orders needed to qualify?
  • Will the insurance company send out a nurse to do an assessment?
  • What is your daily, weekly, monthly maximum? Do you have an inflation clause in your policy?
  • Does your premium stop once you activate the policy?
  • If you stop needing care or you are hospitalized, does the elimination period start over?
The sooner you initiate your claim, the sooner your elimination period (deductible) will be met.
