Join a Great Summer Outing for Fredericksburg Seniors!
The Fredericksburg Farmers Market is a weekly happening that draws people in for more than just food. Special events put artists, kids and other groups in the spotlight, and it was recently voted the “Best Community Event” by Free Lance-Star readers.
Gayle Mitchell, the market manager says, “It’s not just about grabbing a couple tomatoes and heading down the road. We know we’re not the only place people can buy food, but we’re a place where someone genuinely cares whether you show up or not.”
The market makes great effort to be welcoming to everyone in the community, including seniors. Vendors even put out extra chairs to offer rest to elderly customers, and customers who show up each Saturday become a part of the market’s family.
Like many of the Fredericksburg region’s farmers markets, the Fredericksburg Market accepts federal benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The market also has programs that reach out to Medicaid participants, helping seniors make healthy food choices and stretch their food budget.
