A Great Thing To Do This Memorial Day Weekend in Stafford!
Celebrate with the American Legion - Wear a Poppy to Honor Veterans on NATIONAL POPPY DAY 5/25
Americans wear a poppy on National Poppy Day, in an annual tribute to the price of freedom. This year, National Poppy Day is May 25.
Members and friends of the American Legion Post 290 family, led by the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 290 of Stafford County, will distribute bright red memorial poppies during Memorial Day weekend at grocery stores and Walmart in Stafford.
The red poppy is a nationally recognized symbol of sacrifice worn by Americans since World War I to honor those who served and died for our country in all wars. Wearing the poppy throughout Memorial Day weekend is one small way to honor and remember our fallen warriors.
Many of the red crepe-paper flowers are handcrafted by hospitalized and disabled military veterans. Making the poppies provides a financial and therapeutic benefit while helping other veterans through donations collected. The poppies are never sold.
The financial benefit realized by our nation’s veterans because of poppy distribution is huge; nearly 3.5 million American Legion Auxiliary poppies were distributed by units last year, raising $2.1 million.
Please stop and receive a poppy to wear. For information, contact The American Legion Post 290 in Stafford at 540/659-4461; or Mary Schelin, Poppy Chairman, at 571/361-6370.
