Alzheimer’s Prevention and Awareness
BrightStar Care of Fredericksburg & Springfield Supports Alzheimer’s Prevention
The Benefits of Local Home Care for Area Seniors with Alzheimer’s
Over the next eight years, the number of Virginians with Alzheimer’s disease will swell by nearly 36 percent, to about 190,000, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. It’s part of a global trend: The World Health Organization projects that the number of people living with dementia will triple—from 50 million to 152 million—by 2050.
Why the increase? Because the Baby Boomer generation, born between 1946 and 1964, will be advancing into the age range when Alzheimer’s is more common. This is compounded by the fact that the birth rate during the Baby Boomer years was higher than any other generation since.
The result: In the coming years, the U.S. will face an unprecedentedly large elderly population—people more prone to dementia-related diseases. Therefore, as seniors age, whether or not struggling with physical ailments, living alone can take a toll on them. Not only can loneliness have a serious impact on their mental and emotional well-being, but it can also spill over into other areas of their lives as well. They may withdraw from their families and friends, making it harder to know how well they're doing. They may even lose the motivation to tend to their hygiene, nutrition, or the cleanliness of their homes. The presence of a companion caregiver in their home can lift their spirits, restore their self-esteem, and put them back on track so that they can continue living comfortably at home.
As our population ages their needs increase including food and wellness care services. This June help our local community and support the local Alzheimer's association in partnership with the missions of Brightstar Care of Fredericksburg & Springfield, and local Sugar Shack efforts to raise Food Bank items for the aging Senior Community that include support for aging Alzheimers and Dementia patients.
One of the main benefits of considering homecare for a senior with Alzheimer's is food services. For seniors who don’t have homecare and may need food assistance the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank is available for qualifying community members.
