THE MORE YOU KNOW: KIDNEYS
We’ve made several blog postings about the importance of your kidneys, knowledge and tips pertaining to your kidneys and diseases.
But now it’s time for some fun. Considering National Kidney Month, here are some interesting facts and statistics about KIDNEYS!!!
Did you know that your body only requires ONE kidney to live?
That’s right! Some people are actually born with one kidney, or have had a kidney transplant resulting in one kidney. The remaining kidney typically is often able to compensate for the other missing kidney.
Your kidney pumps more than FIFTY gallons of blood daily!
It’s hard to believe that an organ that small can do such a substantial amount of work! Your kidneys are responsible for removing waste and excess liquid from your body by filtering through your blood. The kidneys control the production of red blood cells and release hormones that regulate your blood pressure.
The average kidney is about as big as a cell phone and weighs between four and six ounces. They are bean shaped (hence, kidney bean) and are around 10-12cm long.
Crazy! Even with that size, the kidney receives more blood than all of the other organs, except for your liver.
Did you know that roughly 37 millions Americans are living with kidney disease? And, nearly 810,000 are living with kidney failure?
Hope you enjoyed these facts about your kidneys!
