Alzheimer’s Disease: What is it?

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive disease that begins with memory loss, can lead to difficulties having conversations, and can severely impact one’s ability to perform daily tasks. Alzheimer’s disease involves the part of the brain that dictates thought, memory, and language. Alzheimer’s disease is the most current form of dementia. Dementia is a general term for a decline in mental ability that is severe enough to affect daily life. It is caused by damage to the neurons of the brain. These damaged neurons are essential to all aspects of human activity. Currently, there are 6.7 million Americans over the age of 65 that are living with Alzheimer’s.

Symptoms of Alzheimer’s
The most common early sign is difficulty with short-term memory or completing familiar tasks. Everyone may experience different symptoms, some of the symptoms may include:
-Problems with language
-Changes in personality
-Poor or increased judgment
-Difficulty with performing familiar tasks
-Misplacing things

Treatments for Alzheimer’s
It’s important to speak with your provider about current treatment options that are available. The treatment plans will be determined based on your age and current overall health, and the current severity of your symptoms and how they affect daily life. It’s essential to be honest with your provider and share what your goals are with treatment. The FDA has approved two different categories of treatment options. They have approved one category of drugs that will help temporarily ease symptoms, and the other category will help change the disease progression.
