Help End Elder Abuse - Raise Awareness

Sadly, elder abuse affects 1 in 10 older Americans. As a care manager and senior advocate, addressing this issue is extremely important to me. In an effort, to raise awareness and protect vulnerable adults, we are trying to get as many people as possible involved in sharing this important information to the people they interact with.

To stop it, we have to spot it! With that in mind, we have highlighted the warning signs of elder abuse on the back of this card and also encourage people to advocate for seniors by reporting what they see. It’s truly everyone’s business – especially those of us who work in senior care!

Over the years, I’ve seen abuse in many forms such as financial abuse, physical, and mental abuse. Also, self-neglect and neglect by others. In fact, as a home care provider, we provide an extra level of safety against elder abuse because we are the eyes and ears in the home watching over a senior.

Our caregivers learn about elder abuse during their training. Not all seniors are able to communicate incidents of abuse, particularly those with cognitive impairment. Our caregivers are aware of the signs such as bodily marks that could indicate physical abuse. Our protocol is that when caregivers spot anything suspicious, they are mandated to call our office immediately. We take abuse seriously by investigating the situation based on our caregiver’s report, communicate with our client’s families, if applicable and, ultimately report issues to Adult Protective Services when necessary.

In an effort, to raise awareness and protect vulnerable adults, we are trying to get as many people as possible involved in sharing this important information. Please download our Break the Silence – Help End Elder Abuse! flyer and make it available to your staff, patients, residents, and their families.
