Taking a break from caring for a loved one is known as “respite care”. Caregiver support services can be a temporary relief from caregiving and provide respite for the primary caregiver.  It can be hour to run errands or a week to go on vacation.

Respite can be time spent to rest and seemingly normal things like walking on the beach or even something caregiver-related, like attending a support group. Whatever is done during the break, it’s about the caregiver putting their own needs first, making themselves — for once — the priority.

“Think of it like the oxygen mask on an airplane,” says Martha Rañón, director of government and community affairs, for the Southern Caregiver Resource Center. “You put it on yourself first. If you don’t take care of yourself first, you can’t help that other person.”
