Four Types of Weight-bearing Exercises

If your elderly family member has been diagnosed with osteoporosis, her doctor probably recommended that she start something called weight-bearing exercise. Weight-bearing exercise helps to strengthen your senior’s bones so that even with osteoporosis they’re less likely to fracture. Make sure that whatever exercise your senior wants to try is something her doctor agrees is okay.

Walking

One of the easiest ways to get started with any type of exercise, including weight-bearing types, is to start walking. Walking doesn’t require your elderly family member to invest in any exotic or expensive equipment. As long as she’s got footwear that fits her well and is comfortable, she can get started. Walking outside can be more interesting than walking on a treadmill, but both are effective forms of weight-bearing exercise for her.

Dancing

Some people find walking absolutely boring even in the most beautiful landscapes. Another way to get some weight-bearing movement into your senior’s life is for her to do something like dancing. A more formal approach, like taking dance lessons, can be effective, but your senior doesn’t have to be that structured if she doesn’t want to be. Simply putting on a playlist of songs that inspire her to move and then getting dancing is quite effective, too.

Yoga or Stretching

Yoga and other forms of stretching give your senior’s joints and muscles a workout, but she’s usually also standing for many of these stretches. That brings an element of weight-bearing into these forms of exercise. If your elderly family member needs to be a little more flexible and work on her balance, yoga and other stretching exercises can give her a little bit of everything that she’s looking for from exercise.

Bicycling

Another form of weight-bearing exercise your senior might want to explore is bicycling. This can be easier on her than walking, but it also helps to work her heart and lungs as well as the larger muscles of her body. Unless she wants to take up mountain biking, your senior doesn’t need a fancy bike at all. A cruising bicycle can help her to get around just fine for her purposes.

Some of these exercises are ones that your aging family member can engage in at home easily. Others might require her to go somewhere else, which can be a problem if she doesn’t drive any longer. Elder care providers can take over the driving for her and let her focus on moving a little more.
