BrightStar Care of Charlotte Celebrates Social Work Month 2021

What is a Social Worker?

There are two main types of social workers: direct-service social workers, who help people solve and cope with problems in their everyday lives, and clinical social workers, who diagnose and treat mental, behavioral, and emotional issues. Social workers can work in a variety of settings, including mental health clinics, schools, hospitals, and private practices.

Social Work Month in March is a time to celebrate this great profession.

Social workers are essential to Charlotte's community well-being. As a home health care provider, BrightStar Care works with Social Workers and Case Managers to assist in the continuation of care for patients discharged home from hospitals or skilled nursing rehab facilities and in assisted living communities.

During Social Work Month, we take time to share more about the many positive contributions of the profession and celebrate all the social workers we know.

BrightStar Care of Charlotte helps celebrate this year’s Social Work Month by highlight the invaluable contributions social workers are making, especially as we address the Coronavirus pandemic.

Watch this vide by the National Association of Social Workers to learn more about the roll they play in our community:

The purpose of Social Work Month is to inform the public, policymakers, and legislators about the way Charlotte Social Workers "each day meet people where they are and help them live to their fullest potential."

History of Social Work:
Social work has been around for more than a century and has made significant contributions to our nation. Social work is one of the fastest-growing professions in the United States, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). There are currently about 700,000 professional social workers in our nation, but that number is expected to rise to more than 800,000 by 2029, BLS said.

Social workers such as social reformer Jane Addams, former Labor Secretary Frances Perkins, and civil rights leaders Dorothy Height, Whitney Young, and Ida B. Wells have helped Americans secure voting rights, equal rights, Social Security, unemployment insurance, and other programs. We also see social workers throughout our community protecting children from abuse and neglect, providing mental health and substance use disorder treatment, assisting active-duty military, veterans and their families, and in schools, helping at risk youth.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts Charlotte Social Workers!  You are community heroes.
