Charlotte Families Should Be Aware of the Dangers of Ticks and Use Safe Insect Repellent When Outdoors
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, an invasive species of “exotic” tick native to east Asia has been discovered in North Carolina, and it is known to be an “aggressive biter.”
North Carolina State officials are trying to see how widespread the new ticks are, and monitor for diseases they may spread. Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever are two of the four diseases most often associated with ticks in North Carolina. Most diseases spread by ticks can be treated with antibiotics if caught early, but death can result if the disease goes untreated.
The Longhorned tick was found recently in Polk County, which is approximately 90 minutes west of Charlotte. Details were not released, but state veterinarians have been issued a warning to be on the lookout for a rapid spread.
