I was listening to music yesterday and came across a song by the Dixie Chicks entitled Silent House. Silent House was written by the Chicks and one of my favorite artists, Neil Finn of Crowded House. The song blew me away. As much as I loved Crowded House’s version which I first heard many years ago, The Dixie Chicks version is even better. It brought tears to my eyes and an upwelling of deep emotion. Not only is it beautifully performed, it’s lyrics truly hit home with me, and I think it’s worth sharing with you.
Interestingly and sadly, it’s a song about loss – not of a lost lover, but of a loved one with Alzheimer’s Disease. “These walls have eyes; Rows of photographs; And faces like mine.” “It’s true; I’m missing you; As I stand alone in your room.” It’s a sad song but not a hopeless one. It’s more about fond memories, forgiveness and moving on. “I will try to connect; All the pieces you’ve left; I will carry it on; And let you forget. And I’ll remember the years; When your mind was clear; How the laughter and life; Filled up this silent house.”
