Learn About New Marijuana Laws in Illinois

December 26, 2019
On January 1, 2020, the possession and private use of marijuana by adults over 21 will become legal in our neighboring state of Illinois.  What does this mean for clients and employees of BrightStar Care in St Louis?  In a word, “nothing”.

The use of marijuana and any other intoxicating substance is and will remain against BrightStar policy.  In their role as caregivers, BrightStar employees’ responsibilities to our clients are far too great for them to risk having impaired judgment – much like surgeons, airline pilots, truck and taxi drivers and others whose clear faculties are critical to others’ safety.  Legal or illegal, BrightStar will continue its zero-tolerance policy for marijuana.  We will continue to drug test all new employees and refuse employment to anyone who tests positive for any banned substance.  We will continue to drug test anyone involved in a workplace accident or who may be suspected of using drugs.  We also have the ability and may drug test employees on a random basis to uphold this policy.

As part of our commitment to “a higher standard of care”, the health and safety of our clients and employees is paramount.  Regardless of marijuana’s “legality” at any state or federal level, in our line of work, we believe a zero-tolerance policy on drugs is simply the right thing to do.
