Going Home After Surgery

Post-Surgery Activity Tips for Boise Seniors

When a patient is able to return to his own home after leaving the hospital there should be a transitional care plan in place and support at home.

A patient will also need to have a plan to safely return to normal activity.  Here are some tips about activity after surgery.

The level of activity permitted varies widely with the procedure performed. Some surgeries, such as a hip replacement, may require physical therapy while other patients may be discharged with instructions to “take it easy.

Pain after surgery is a good indication of whether or not you're trying to do too much. Pain should be managed with the prescribed pain medication. If any activity causes pain to increase, you may be trying to accomplish too much too soon.

Experiencing no pain is often an unreasonable expectation, but pain should be controlled enough to allow walking to the bathroom, sitting up in a chair and coughing

Having a plan in place to transition from bed to dressing, walking and other household activity is important.  BrightStar Care offers transitional care services, including personal care, to help meet the needs of patients as they recover at home.
