Social Work Month in March is a way to recognize and learn about the profession of social work.
Social workers are essential to our community's well-being.
As a home health care provider, BrightStar Care works with Social Workers and Case Managers to assist in the continuation of care for patients discharged home from hospitals or skilled nursing rehab facilities and in assisted living communities.
During the Coronavirus pandemic, social workers have also been on the frontlines along with doctors, nurses, home health care workers, grocery store staff, and other essential employees. For instance, local trauma social workers in the emergency room at our local Hospitals in New Hampshire, are helping people hospitalized because of the Coronavirus get the best quality care and the services they need to recover once they return home to their families and communities. Other social workers in Bedford and Manchester areas are helping people cope with mental illness and substance use disorders during the pandemic, often doing this job remotely to keep everyone safer.
The social work profession faces challenges. There is a shortage of social workers in schools where they are needed to help young people cope with complicated issues such as trauma, poverty, the opioid addiction crisis, and schools need more resources to help students learn during the pandemic. And although social workers play a critical role in our nation’s health care and mental health system, they could be better compensated for the work they do, according to a 2019 report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.
During Social Work Month this is how you can help support Social Work:
- Thank a Social Worker for their work!
- Share how social workers help our community and tell stories on how essential the profession is on social media - Share this Blog!
- Purchase Social Work Month merchandise from official vendor Jim Coleman Ltd. as a gift to support the National Association of Social Worker.
