BrightStar Care has announced dates for their dementia education sessions, scheduled through the end of 2019, at their Anne Arundel County office, 2111 Baldwin Avenue, Suite 3, in Crofton. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in the Virtual Dementia Tour® (VDT), a dementia simulation facilitated by BrightStar Care.
The VDT – a patented program of nonprofit organization Second Wind Dreams® – uses patented sensory tools and training based on research conducted by P.K. Beville, M.S., a specialist in geriatrics and founder of Second Wind Dreams®. The VDT makes it possible for participants to experience the physical and mental challenges associated with dementia. This simulation is ideal for professional and family caregivers, health care workers and community members, who have routine interactions with people living with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia or other cognitive impairments.
The organization's regional director of Marketing and Community Outreach and Certified Dementia Practitioner (CDP), Christina Wingate-Spence and Wendy Traff-Barrow, regional director of Private Duty Operations and Recruiting, are trained facilitators of the Virtual Dementia Tour and have been offering the simulation and training to various health care providers, community agencies and family caregivers across the Eastern Shore and in Anne Arundel and Price George's counties since the fall of 2017.
“BrightStar Care is committed to be a community resource for Alzheimer’s and dementia education,” comments Wingate-Spence. “The Virtual Dementia Tour allows us the opportunity to not only simulate Alzheimer's and dementia for our staff, but also to offer an impactful experience to the community's professional and family caregivers to provide a window to the minds of those living with cognitive impairments. Our team takes great pride in the specialized Alzheimer's and dementia care that our caregivers are trained to provide our clients and their family members.”
BrightStar Care invites community members – caregivers, family members, professionals – to their office for free, public sessions of the VDT. Virtual Dementia Tours will be available bimonthly on the following dates: Wednesday, July 17; Wednesday, September 25 and Wednesday, November 20.
Registration for the public sessions is requested as space will be limited for each time slot. For additional information or to register, contact Wingate-Spence at 410-820-4200 or by e-mail at christina.wingate-spence@brightstarcare.com.
