Requirements to Become a CNA

While the process and specific requirements to become a CNA vary by state, you must have either a high school diploma or equivalent (such as a GED)  before completing a state-approved certified nursing assistant training program. These programs consist of both classroom instruction and lectures, as well as practical hands-on skills training. Topics covered range from communication skills and compassion to nursing-related skills such as specimen collection and checking vital signs.

After completing a state-approved program, you’ll also need to pass the certification exam, complete a background and register for your state license. Some states also require continuing education for license renewal. Make sure to research and review your state’s specific CNA education requirements and guidelines.
