Bay Area Seniors Benefit From San Francisco Farmers Market

LEARN ABOUT THE SF SENIOR FARMERS’ MARKET NUTRITION PROGRAM FOR LOW INCOME SENIORS

The Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) is a 100 percent federally funded program which provides low-income seniors with check booklets that can be used to purchase fresh fruits, vegetables, cut herb and honey at Certified Farmers’ Markets (CFM).

The program is administered nationally by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Services Agency, and in California, by the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA).

CDFA has partnered with California Department of Public Health’s Women, Infants and Children's Program (WIC) in certifying farmers and CFMs to accept SFMNP check booklets. Annually CDFA provides seniors check booklets to redeem with 1,000 farmers at 500 CFMs.

VISIT and Support the SAN FRANCISCO FARMERS MARKET!

Heart of the City Farmers Market is a uniquely independent, farmer-operated, nonprofit farmers market located year round on Sundays and Wednesdays in San Francisco's United Nations Plaza.
The market opened in 1981 with a mission to support and sustain small farmers and make fresh food accessible for low-income customers who struggle to afford adequate nutrition in a city with the highest cost of living in the nation.

The San Francisco Farmers Market distributes over $1 million annually in food assistance at their information tent, provides education programs for people facing the nutritional challenges of poverty, execute the largest farmers market EBT program in California, and makes over $250,000 per year in grant-funded incentives available to promote purchasing sustainable, local produce with an EBT card.

They are an independent non-profit that is operated by its member farmers.  Since the market's first day, these farmers have been committed to helping to create a healthy Heart of the City.
