Home Safety Tips for San Fernando Valley Seniors Living with Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer’s disease usually develops in people older than 65, although it can also develop in people younger than 65. At any age, change is inevitable for those with Alzheimer’s and their families, and being safe at home is especially important.

Tips for safety throughout the house:

  • Light is essential, so ensure plenty of natural light throughout the day to facilitate clear vision. Close the curtains at night to indicate it is nighttime.
  • Clashing patterns on the floor and upholstery can create confusion, so keep the decor simple.
  • Always keep telephone numbers near the telephone.
  • Tripping on rugs or objects on the floor is easy for an Alzheimer’s patient, so remove area rugs.
  • Keep household cleaning items and hazardous substances locked in cabinets.
  • Alzheimer’s patients may wander, so make sure that all doors leading outside have alarms and locks.
