Tips for Protecting Your Parent’s Safety When Out of the Home

Getting out of the house and participating in activities, outings, and other experiences is a fantastic way to keep your parent’s activity level high and support better mental and emotional health and well-being. It is important, however, for both your parent and you to keep their safety in mind when they are out of the home so that they can enjoy these activities and avoid potential dangers.

Use these tips to protect your parent’s safety when out of the home:

Avoid being alone. Your senior should not go out of the house alone. Either you or an elder care provider should be with your parent to not only help them handle any needs while they are out, but also to create a more secure and confident personal environment.

Guard your bag. Encourage your parent not to let their purse dangle over their shoulder. Instead they should hold it close to their body or avoid carrying a purse all together. If your parent is carrying a wallet, they should not put it in their back pocket. Never leave a purse or bag sitting in a shopping cart.

Stay visible. Avoid using dark or unpopular routes, and always park somewhere that is well-lit, highly visible, and easily accessible from wherever your parent is going.

Stay connected. Make sure that your parent has a mobile device that is fully charged and has phone numbers for you and other members of their care network programmed into it.

Stay secure. When in the car, keep the doors locked and the windows up. If you must have a window down, only lower it a few inches so that no one can put an arm through it. Before approaching the car or getting out to go to the door, have keys in-hand so that you are not digging around for them and you can get inside as quickly as possible.

If you have been looking for a way to enhance your parent’s quality of life, fill care gaps that might exist in the efforts that you give them, and support a more active and fulfilling lifestyle as they age in place, starting elder care for them might be the ideal solution. With the ability to create a customized schedule that means they will be with your parent when your parent specifically needs them, an elderly home care services provider is a fantastic supplement to the care that you already give your aging parent. Highly personalized services, companionship, and valuable support mean that your parent can continue to live a life that is as independent as possible even when dealing with challenges and limitations. Some of these services can include transportation, assistance with activities of daily living, physical mobility support and assistance, and companionship and activities to boost their mental and emotional health and well-being.
